When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin

My rating: 4.5/5

When Crickets Cry is a thought-provoking tale that brilliantly depicts author Charles Martin’s storytelling skills. This poignant story is interspersed with themes of grief, self-redemption, and hope that inspiringly resonate in the heart of the reader.

Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV): Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.

When Crickets Cry impactfully depicts the life of Reese Mitchell, a renowned heart transplant surgeon, whose journey to the profession was rooted in his love and lifelong ambition to help his childhood friend, Emma. A tragic event occurs that changes his outlook on his career and causes him to abandon his purpose in life. While living discreetly in a small town in Florida, he meets a young girl named Annie, whose zest for life and unwavering faith in God for healing, unleashes the strain of grief and guilt that imprisoned his joy and suppressed his destiny.

“You stir man to take pleasure in praising You, because You have made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in You” (quote from Saint Augustine in When Crickets Cry).

This beautifully written story is immersed with engulfing characters, descriptive imagery, and an inspiring narrative. This novel is undoubtedly a page-turner that grabs the attention of the reader rather quickly. The heart wrenching aspects of the story are well balanced with the portrayal of hope and faith during burdensome moments. There was also adequate Christian faith content included in the plot that depicted the sovereign love and grace of Jesus. The coming-of-age portion of the story was delightful to read and provided a great segway into the enthralling climax of the story. Ultimately, this was an astounding story that I highly recommend to others.
