Shadow of the Storm by Connilyn Cossette

My rating: 5/5

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you (Isaiah 26:3, ESV).

A well-balanced intricate book, grappling issues of despair, betrayal, and disgrace, including instances of suspense and romance, Shadow of the Storm by Connilyn Cossette is a story that illuminates the compassion and grace of the Lord in the face of devastation and shame.

Shadow of the Storm is book two in the three book Out from Egypt series, in which readers are immersed into the unforgettable characters from the first book of the series, Counted with the Stars. In this novel, the plot centers around the protagonist Shira, a prominent character in the first book who is a part of the Hebrew Levite tribe. Readers witness her genuinely kind and gentle nature and regard her process of accepting her internal strength as well as the calling on her life to help women within the skill of midwifery. While having survived a traumatic past of slavery and assault, Shira experiences the evolution of the restorative power of the Lord in healing her from the chains of her past. Familiar characters from the first book reappear in this novel, such as Kiya, Eben, and Jumo, which provides an even more engaging read.

Shadow of the Storm introduces the reading audience to new characters, including the antagonist of the story, Dvorah. An Egyptian woman, whose betrayal by her mother hardens her heart. That hardened heart turns into stone towards the Hebrews, due to the blame she imparts on them following a devastating loss. Full of grief and hurt, Dvorah’s relentless bitterness is undeservingly yielded to Shira, and impacts her family and her future.

A page-turning, heart wrenching, and awe-inspiring novel, Shadow of the Storm is a phenomenal story that contains superb character development and a heartening plot. With plenty of Christian faith content, this novel edifies the significance of keeping your eyes, heart, and mind onto the Lord rather than focusing on the distresses of life. I highly recommend this novel.
