Peace Like a River by Leif Enger

My rating: 4/5

A superb tale that intricately depicts how one critical decision can tremendously impact a family, Peace Like a River by Leif Enger is a profound story about family, faith, and forgiveness.

Peace Like a River is a plot and character driven novel that is a sort of coming-of-age family drama. Author Enger skillfully developed a story with a witty tone and endearing characters with intriguing complexities. Narrated by main character Reuben Land, who is an impressionable pre-teen and middle sibling, he becomes the sole witness to a dreadful act committed by his older brother, Davy. Following the unfortunate event, his family, comprised of his father, Jeremiah Land, a man faithfully committed to the Lord, and his unapologetically intelligent sister Swede, decide to go on a journey to protect Davy’s life. As a result of their voyage, their family expands, their Christian faith is tested, and they face potential dangers.

Set during the 1960’s in the blizzard-stricken Dakotas, Peace Like a River is a well-paced novel, with engrossing drama and a hint of romance and suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed the Christian faith content within the plot, as several characters were Christians. I was especially pleased with the portrayal of Jeremiah’s character. His resilient faith and love of Jesus is inspiring and is captured throughout the entire story. He is depicted with an admirable devotion to Christ, shown by his compassion and selflessness, as well as his fervent praying and Bible reading. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an enthralling story that centers on family, includes charming characters, and portrays the marvel of faith amid tragedy.
