Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
A heart-warming tale of family, forgiveness, and healing The Edge of Belonging by Amanda Cox is an astounding story that depicts the heart of Christ through the sacrificial love of others. This inspiring novel captivated my heart by the thought-provoking plot, remarkable characters, and hopeful moral of the story.
This dual timeline novel features a few protagonist characters in the plot, with the prominent character being Ivy Rose. The novel opens in present day, as she returns to her small hometown in Tennessee, following the death of a close relative. Upon handling the estate, she soon discovers the truth of her adoption, which uncovers a few secrets that lead to her timely healing and breakthrough that was integral to her acceptance of the purposeful life the Lord intended for her to live. During her restoration she is reminded of the steadfast love of Christ as well as her inherited strength.
My favorite and most poignant character in the novel is protagonist, Mrs. Pearl, Ivy’s grandmother, who is primarily depicted in the dual timeline of the past set during the early 90’s. Mrs. Pearl is the epitome of a faith filled, resilient, Christian woman, whose nurturing spirit and profound love to those in need was immensely inspiring. Her character was exceptionally portrayed in the plot and added a hopeful tone to the narrative.
“Love is love. Nurturing is nurturing. It doesn’t take a blood relative. We’re all adopted into God’s family through Jesus. And I decided long ago that if it was good enough for God, it was good enough for me. So I set in my heart that I would love and mother anyone who crossed by path who needed that kind of love” (Mrs. Pearl, The Edge of Belonging).
This was the first book I read by Amanda Cox, and I was incredibly pleased. Her writing is immersive and impactful, with realistic characters that add depth to the story. The plot has an underline Christian faith element that was both touching and encouraging. The novel brilliantly captured not only the blessing of adoption, but how as believers we are gracefully adopted into the royal family of God through the sacrificial and steadfast love of Jesus Christ. If you enjoy dual timeline stories, that depict the importance of familial bonds, the love of Christ, and includes a small element of clean romance and mystery, I encourage you to read this book.
