The Crumbs Off Heaven’s Table by D.M. Griffin

My rating: 5/5

A spiritually impactful read that emphasizes the steadfast love of Jesus Christ and illustrates the glorious attributes of Jesus as a healer, deliverer, restorer, and redeemer, author D.M. Griffin superbly relates themes of love, spiritual warfare, and redemption in The Crumbs Off Heaven’s Table.

The Crumbs Off Heaven’s Table is the fictional depiction of the Syrophoenician Woman, an unnamed Canaanite captured in Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24-30, whose great faith is exhibited when she asks Jesus to heal her severely demon oppressed daughter. Dynamically written with excellent character development, the story consists of two main characters Serene and Rogan, whose chance meeting of one another changes their lives forever. A budding romance slowly occurs with much difficulty, as they both come from different spectrums of economic and social status. Serene is a servant to a wealthy businessman, who rescued her as a child orphan. The details of her childhood abandonment surface and threaten to disrupt her destiny. Rogan is the son of a wealthy and prominent merchant, whose life of privilege and wealth has shielded his spiritual growth and skewed his outlook on life. A chance meeting with Serene not only changes his life’s focus but inspires his religious belief of the one true God. Serene and Rogan endure intense spiritual warfare that results in tumultuous experiences, but ultimately leads them to the great Savior whose power and ultimate demonstration of love saves their lives.

Psalm 139: If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

The plot is adequately paced with moments of thrill and surprise. The story is intriguing and immersed in biblical wisdom. Griffin impressively included plenty of scriptures within the narrative that were annotated, so that the reader could effortlessly find the exact scriptural reference in the Bible. Although a fictional account, the author makes it clear in the Forward section that the story is in no way intended to replace the infallible Word of God. She encourages readers to read the Bible, and even included questions at the end of the book for group and personal study.

Ultimately, there is liberty in Jesus, and Griffin depicts this truth beautifully in The Crumbs Off Heaven’s Table. I highly recommend this book.
