My rating: 4/5
Both thought-provoking and inspiring, Fear Has a Name by Creston Mapes grips the reader from the first sentence to the enrapturing ending.
“The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble” (Proverbs 16:4, ESV).
Book one of a three-part series, Fear Has a Name is a mystery, that follows the main character Jack Crittendon, a newspaper journalist, as he and his family experience turmoil when a home invasion turns into an unrelenting stalking ordeal. In addition to the trauma his family is experiencing, Jack is investigating the mysterious disappearance of a local pastor that uncovers a dark secret amongst the church leadership. Told from the perspective of several points of views within the plot, the novel provides an authentic view of the effects of emotional abuse, depression, and despair.
Fear Has a Name is regarded as Christian fiction, and the plot is substantially faith based. I loved this aspect of the story, as it incorporates significant biblical wisdom that enlightens the reader. The novel features characters that have experienced trauma and utilizes a message with an undertone that encourages hope and faith. In addition, the story will cause the reader to be reflective upon one’s own personal life experiences. Moreover, the plot causes one to question the depth of one’s faith in Jesus by provoking examination of potential responses to trials and obstacles. Would you cling to the Lord during a crisis, or would you distance yourself?
This is the first body of work that I have read by Creston Mapes, and it will surely not be the last. If you desire to read a page-turning mystery with strong spiritual references that instill the importance of faith and hope in the Lord, I highly recommend this book.
